In February 2021 the Newcastle Hawks and the Nelson Bay Sharks Rugby League club legally amalgamated to form the Northern Hawks Rugby Football League Club Incorporated.

In 2021 and 2022 we entered teams in the Newcastle Rugby League Reserve Grade and Under 19s competitions with the stated goal of entering a First Grade team in the NSWRL Denton Cup competition.

After emphatically taking out the 2022 Newcastle District Reserve Grade Premiership, our club was invited into the Denton Engineering Cup (Newcastle District First Grade) for 2023.

The Northern Hawks played their debut season in the 2023 Denton Engineering Cup and took solid steps towards a becoming sustainable club at Newcastle district level and establishing a rugby league pathway for our local juniors.
